News and Info Archives

October 1, 2007 El Tour group rides this coming Sunday. Check the calendar. These are "no drop" rides and supported with a "follow" car. We would like to see as many SVers out there as possible—this is our chance to ride with "unattached", unlicensed riders—a great recruitment opportunity, as well as a nice easy recovery ride for those that went harder the day or week before. These will be every Sunday, starting Oct 7th through Nov 11th.

Get out and enjoy the riding, the weather, and friends!

2007 State Track Championships

The 2007 edition of the AZ state track championships was huge. Fifty-one riders traveled to San Diego to vie for the coveted state championship jersey. Added to the 51 were 17 California riders made a total of 68 registered racers. Of that 68, there were 2 National and World Champions, Terry Roach and Vic Copeland. By far the largest club representation was from Saguaro Velo, with 13 riders in attendance. Saguaro Velo’s total medal count was 47medals, 27 gold, 14 silver and 6 bronze.

Sver’s in attendance were: Don Melhado, AJ and Jay Guyot, Scott, Wes, Patty and Bret Overmyer, Bill Harman, Paul Domingue, Tom Davis, Bill Barns, Tracy Barclay and Rich Goedel. These SV riders collected 47 medals and 27 championship jerseys. Saguaro Velo is without doubt the Arizona track powerhouse.

Photography by Bill Egan is here.

Results are posted here.

Congratulations on the perfect end to a perfect track season.

July 10th, 2007 NOTE to interested parties: The July Track schedule has changed! Due to the increase in the number of participants there will now be racing on Saturday in the late afternoon. Check the updated schedule for more details by clicking here. Any questions/comments please contact us.

Look forward to seeing everyone out there.

June 29th, 2007 The second track trip results are here. Lots of people showed up. We ran a little late on Sunday. Looks like we are going to have to start running some of the events on Saturday evening if the attendance continues to grow. Many thanks to Don and Tracy for all their volunteer work. Again, if you have not tried the track check it out. $5-10/day bike rental. Partner up with someone for cheap housing, leave early Saturday morning, back early evening Sunday. Its a blast. Come on out y'all.

One Picacho down and two to go in the summer TT series. Also coming up is Lemmon, and Kitt peak. The next Picacho TT will include a Team TT category. We will need extra volunteers.

May 25th, 2007 Hey people, just a heads up on a couple of things:

First, a big congrats to John Thaxton for his well-earned 2nd place finish in Cat 5 at Colossal Cave last weekend. Awesome effort John!

Second - our summer TT series is upon us and we will need volunteers to help out. Scheduled are 3 picacho TTs, Lemmon, and Kitt Peak. Make a special note for the 2nd picacho as that event will also include a Team Time Trial. 4-person teams can sign up (the clocks stops when rider #3 crosses the line). Obviously we will need extra start line holders as well as some other positions to help track the teams. We are expecting a decent number of team sign ups as this year there is a State TTT championship in September, held separate from the individual TT two weeks later in the month.

Team meeting this coming Tuesday May 29th, 6:30p. All of this will be discussed and more while we consume mass quantities of Lerua's Fine Mexican food. Also, consider coming our for one of the 3 remaining track trips. They are a blast. SV usually has a strong showing.

May 7th, 2007 The years first track trip results are here. The event was well attended for an April trip. Unfortunately, no track in May but we are looking forward to the June, July, and August (States) trips. If you have not tried the track check it out. $5/day bike rental. Partner up with someone for cheap housing, leave early Saturday morning, back early evening Sunday. Its a blast. Come on out y'all.

We have our summer TT series are coming up (three Picacho TTs, Lemmon, and Kitt peak). Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the schedule and help volunteer. Note too, that the second Picacho TT will include a Team TT category. We will need extra volunteers as holders.

February 25th, 2007 The 2007 Sonoita-Patagonia TT results are here. It was a bit windy out there but we had a good turn out. Thanks again to all the Saguaro Velo volunteers who helped out at this event. You people help make racing events run nice and smooth.
January 21st, 2007 The 2007 Senior Olympics Results are up here. Thanks to all the Saguaro Velo volunteers who helped the events run smoothly. And congratulations to Saguaro Velo's D.R. Deichman and Bill Barnes for gold medal efforts. Great job all!
January 15th, 2007

Happy New Year everyone. Racing season is just around the corner. Make sure you step up and volunteer to help out at one or more of our events this year. The overview looks like this:

Feb: Sonoita-Patagonia TT
Apr: Track Trip #1
Jun: Picacho TT #1, Track Trip #2
Jul: Picacho TT #2, Track Trip #3
Aug: Picacho TT #3, Mt. Lemmon TT, State Track Championships
Sep: Kitt Peak TT

So, get out and try some racing this year. Put a time down on a TT, then improve on it the next month. If you are new to racing, don't hesitate to ask questions on the group email list. There are plenty of Saguaro Velo veterans out there, with lots of experience that will be glad to share their thoughts and perspectives.

If you have been off the bike for a while make a commitment to get back on. Start small. Maybe an hour a week. Just do it. Get out and ride.

And don't forget to volunteer. Happy New Year everyone!

August 8th, 2006

We need to get caught up on the news people... Saguaro Velo has had some racing success here lately. Congrats to Bill Harman for winning the Cat 5 crit at Casas Adobes last weekend. Scott Ellis did well in a strong Cat 123 field. The previous weekend we added more state champions at the track. Congrats to all. The results are posted here and there are pictures up in the Gallery. If anyone wants any high res versions of the pictures contact Nate.

Thanks again to all the volunteers that helped State Track run smooth. Don, Nancy, Raphaella, and the folks from team Strada. We could not have pulled it off with out you. Next up for the club is the Kitt Peak Hill Climb. See you there!

July 15th, 2006

The Mount Lemmon Hill Climb was today. The results are posted here

The 2nd Picacho Peak TT was today. The results are posted here

Again, a big thank you to all our Saguaro Velo volunteers. With out you guys there would be much less bicycle racing in Arizona. The two events today had 86 and 43 riders for the 20 and 40K TTs, respectively. Great job everyone. Next up will be the Mt. Lemmon TT. NOTE the new course length and starting point due to law enforcement request.

June 29th, 2006

The most recent track trip was this past weekend. Lots of people showed up. Another big ole Match Sprint tournament. All the results are posted here.

The next and final San Diego Track Trip is July 29 and 30th! This is the State Championships.
Racing both on Saturday and Sunday. Come on out and compete!

NOTE: There is an update to the Mt. Lemmon hill climb info. Check the flyer here. Basically, there is a new starting point as the Sheriff is not going to allow parking on Catalina Hwy anymore. All parking must be on Snyder. The new starting point is near Snyder and Cat Hwy.

June 11th, 2006

The 1st Picacho Peak TT was today. The results are posted here.

A big thank you to all our volunteers for helping us handle our large turnout. We are expecting big turnouts for the next two TTs as well. The State TT Championship will be on this course in the fall of 2006.

April 24th, 2006

The latest and greatest track trip was this past weekend. We did a big ole Match Sprint tournament and velodrome regular Bill Egan came out on top, followed closely by relative newcomers Craig Streit and David Malick. I wish we had video to post of the final 'cause it was awesome! No more than 1/4 wheel separated the two finalists at the end.

The next San Diego Track Trip is May 20 and 21! Be there!

March 14th, 2006

The Ides of March is tomorrow. Watch your back.

The first San Diego Track Trip is this weekend! Schedule available here. We look forward to seeing you there.

SVs have been racing up a storm this season, participating in a bunch of the Phoenix crits, crashing out of Valley of the Sun, suffering hypothermia at the Paradise Bakery TTT and Tumacacori Road Race and generally having fun.

We've elected a new president, Nate Edwards. Matt Runquist had to step down as he is leaving the Tucson area soon. But not soon enough for trackies to avoid him. He's going to Milwaukee and yes, he'll put you up for Superweek.

January 30th, 2006

The Sonoita-Patagonia TT last weekend. Results are posted here.

Mount Lemmon TT results are up here. Thanks to all our riders for our best turnout ever. Special thanks to all the volunteers who ran everything smoothly. Full report to come.

July 20, 2005

The Lerua's Picacho Peak TT series is complete. Series results for 20k riders are here and for 40k riders are here.

Results for the final race of the series are on the results page.

Roving photographer Mason Ibas was once again at the Peak and took photos which you can see at his webpage www.masonibas.com.

Volunteers were Scott and Nancy Ellis for preregistration, Mountain Velo for registration, Saul Mora and Tom Davis at the start line, Scott "again" Ellis at the turnaround and Matt "3rd person" Runquist, Don Melhado and Nancy Ellis at the finish. Big thank you to everyone who helped out.

State Track Championships is this weekend at the velodrome in San Diego. Hope to see you there.

In other track news, we received word from USA Cycling that club member Jay Guyot qualified to compete in the men's sprint events at the Elite Track National Championships at the Home Depot Center in LA next month. While he won't be able to attend, he informed SV Central Command that, "It's an honor just to be nominated".

The final piece of juicy news is this. The Mount Lemmon TT, scheduled for August 14th, 2005 will be extended to the Bear Canyon picnic are this year. That's about 2 and a half additional miles and a few hundred extra feet of climbing. New course means new records and a little bit more fun. Yay!

July 5, 2005

The Sonoita-Patagonia TT was this past weekend. We had a good turnout of around 80 riders. The wind was dead set against the riders and we had no 30 mph club members at all, not even the tandems.

Let's see...volunteering at preregistration were Scott Ellis and Nancy Ellis, registration was Brian Carpenter, Kelly Hales and Chris Rogers, start line was me, Dawn Kelly and Archie Huie, finish line was Don Melhado, Elizabeth and Julia Bitz. Big thanks to everyone for putting on such a successful event.

Jen Runquist won the Women 4 with a 31:10 and Scott Ellis won the Men 3 with a 26:11. Jay had 7th in the Men's 4 with a 26:09. We had a bunch in the Men 5. Leading the charge was Jason Hepler, who scored 3rd place with a 27:03. Also in the 5s were Gary Lawrence, 28:44 (13th), Saul "Landis" Mora, 29:32 (15th), Kelly Hales, 29:55 (17th), Brian Carpenter, 30:29 (19th), Chris Rogers, 31:49 (22nd) and Chance Hales (29th). In Masters Women 40-44, Deb Huie landed second with a blistering 28:51 (yes, she did beat most of the Men 5s). Finally, some weirdo who decided he doesn't need gears (that would be Casey) ran a 26:56, which was fast.

Great job everyone and I will see you at Picacho #3, hopefully on my bike.

June 28, 2005

Elite Track National Championship Qualifier was last weekend in San Diego. All results (including splits for qualifiers) are posted on our results page.

A big thank you is in order to Jolie and her husband from San Diego, whose volunteer work as officials allowed us to put on this event. Thanks also to Julia Bitz for volunteering and everybody else who came out.

This weekend (July 3rd, to be precise) is the Sonoita-Patagonia TT. This downhill TT is always a blast and we hope to see you there. Sven, I already have enough volunteers, so feel free to come out, secure in the knowledge that you'll be able to ride. The next Picacho TT is July 17th.

Our team meeting is Thursday, June 30 at Lerua's Mexican Restaurant. Contact Matt if you need directions, or you are wondering why I refer to myself in the 3rd person.

June 13, 2005

Picacho TT #2 was last weekend. We had our first TTT and contrary to Don's expectations, nobody crashed. SV even managed 2nd of 4 teams! Also racing were Jason Hepler (3rd in cat 5 20k) and Brian Carpenter in his first 40k. Great job guys.

The next Picacho TT is July 17th.

Big thanks to all of our volunteers from Mountain Velo, Desert Foxes and Saguaro Velo. I especially wanna thank Sven Gunn, who showed up expecting to race and instead threw himself into the fire at the start line. He did a commendable job on no notice and saved the race for us. Let's see; Marie Daranyi, Kathy Hardy and someone I don't know worked registration, Scott and Nancy Ellis worked preregistration, Tom Davis and the aforementioned Mr. Gunn worked the start line, Nate Edwards worked the turnaround and Don Melhado, Nancy Ellis and Julia Bitz did the finish line and posted results in a flash. International Man of Mystery Mason Ibas once again was roving the course taking photos and they'll be posted at his website here.

Tucson Crit Series race 2 was also last weekend. Racing were Tom Davis (crashed), Scott Ellis, Matt "incognito" Runquist and Gary Lawrence.

May 31, 2005

Picacho TT #1 was last weekend. The 40k course was rained out so all we had was 20k. Results are here. Photos by International Man of Mystery Mason Ibas are available here.

The next Picacho TT is June 12th. Won't that be fun? We are going to have a Team Time Trial category this time so get yr friends together. Preregistration only for the Team competition. Individual registration will still be available the morning of the race.

Big thanks to all of our volunteers from Mountain Velo and Saguaro Velo. I didn't catch the names of the two women running registration, but Alicia Heiserer did data entry, Todd Abelson and Saul Mora ran the start, Scott Haughey did the turnaround and Julia Bitz, Nancy Ellis and Don Melhado worked the finish.

Tucson Crit Series race 1 was also last weekend. Shoshana Shane won the Cat 4 women, and also participating were Tom Davis, Scott Ellis, Jason Hepler, Saul "Landis" Mora and Dave Deichman. None of them crashed, which means they beat the odds.

May 23, 2005

Arizona Track Series number 3 was last weekend. Results are here.

The first Picacho TT of the year is coming up this weekend. Lots of categories available. Enter the same category three times to earn points towards a series championship.

April 27th, 2005

Arizona Track Series number 2 was last weekend. Results are here. Thanks to Julia Bitz for volunteering. Also, many SV riders did the Tour of the Tucson Mountains last weekend. Results for that are here.

March 22, 2005

The Sonoita-Patagonia TT has been rescheduled for July 3rd, 2005. Come on out for the fastest TT in Arizona.

March 22, 2005

This last weekend was the Tumacacori Road Race and SV had four participants. DR rode to a strong 5th (of 11) in the 55+ field, since they didn't offer a separate 65+. Scott Ellis finished the Men's 3 race in 12th place, despite running a 5k race the previous day. Matt Runquist won the Cat 4 field sprint for 3rd, while Gregg Sciabica came in just behind in 5th. A cramp free time was had by most. Full results are here.

Julia Bitz has posted a bunch of photos from the first Arizona Track Series race on March 13.

March 16, 2005

I have now published the omnium results for the track weekend.

There was more racing in Arizona as well this weekend. A few Saguaro Velos went out to the North End Classic in Yuma and here are the results. Scott Ellis did both the 35+ crit and the cat 3 crit. He was one of only 10 finishers in the 35+ crit. Ouch. That race hurts. DR finished 2nd in both the crit and RR. Good job, guys!

March 15, 2005 Wow! What a weekend. SV had a turnout of 8 riders for this first track weekend. Plus we hauled Andy Stevens of Solvo Massage out there to pamper us when we weren't on the track. Plus Julia Bitz and Tia Edwards helped out on the judges' stand, at the registration table and took a bunch of photos. We had 7 other Arizona racers turn out, including 5 newbies, so the cross scheduling with North End didn't urt us as badly as I had feared.

Saturday, we arrived at the track a little before 1 pm California time and got to see Eddie B. motorpacing some of his riders, which is always fun. We got everyone who needed one set up on rentals and started rolling around the apron and learning how and where to go up track. After about an hour of that, Don, Gary and I showed the people who had never done a flying 200 before our technique. Then it was time to roll around and practice flying 200s at top speed. Next, we learned how to ride in a paceline, which is especially fun when you have 12 or 13 people. We mostly went slow, until Webster decided to sprint for the fun of it:) After the paceline workout, everybody tried a 500/kilo start, which is to see how fast you can get from a stop to full speed. Sort of a 0-30 test for bikes. Finally, we did my favorite workout, a burnout. This is a paceline workout, where the first third is at a steady pace, then the pace increases each lap until people start dropping off. With one lap to go, everybody sprints like hell. It's a lot of fun.

Sunday started nice and early, as we set up registration and got things set up on the track. We started 200s by 9:20 (only 15 minutes late! Woo hoo!). I dropped a 12.8, which is 0.2 off my best, but still good. Gary did a 13.8 (PR at San Diego?), Criminal managed a 14.0, the Pocket Rocket had a 14.2, Webster launched a 14.3, Kansas landed at 14.4, Il Capo Melhado was 14.7 and Shoshananana was a 17.0.

Next up was 2k and 3k pursuits. Casey had a very strong performance at 3:00 flat. Tom was next at 3:06, Webster had a 3:10, Gary had a 3:18, Nate was 3:24 and Shoshana turned in a very nice 3:24 as well.

Following that, we did the first two rounds of Match Sprint. I was in the A's, got 2nd in my first 3 man sprint and 2nd place in the repechage, so I was eliminated. Gary Lawrence was in the B's. He got 3rd in his first heat and also lost his rep, so he was eliminated as well. The C qualifiers were all Saguaro Velo. Casey won the first heat, with Webster second and Shoshana third. Shoshana surprised both of them by going early and gapped them significantly, but she wasn't able to hold it all the way to the line. The second heat was won by Tom Davis, with a blistering move on the back straight. Don came in second and Nate was third. In the first rep heat, Nate beat out a (possibly overconfident?) Webster, while Don came around Shoshana to take the second rep heat and move in to the semifinals.

We took a break from Match Sprint to do the 500 and kilometer TTs. In the kilo, Webster beat out Bitz 1:30.3 to 1:30.8. A very close race. In the 500s, Tom Davis had a 43.5, just beating out Gary Lawrence's 44.0. Nate Edwards came up with a 48.4 in his first attempt. Don had a smokin' 45.1, a very good early season time and Shoshana had a 53.5.

The Match Sprint Semis and Finals were next. In the first C semi final, Julia Bitz's and Tia Edwards' sweethearts were matched up, and Julia's came out on top. In the other semi, Tom Davis smoked around Don Melhado in turn 3, despite Don's best efforts to shake Tom off his wheel. A good race. In the final, Casey Bitz's strategy of going (very) long paid off, as Tom started to come around, but faded in turn four. Bitz won the C championship by a wheel. A great and fun ride to watch.

The last race of the day was a Open Miss and Out, since we only had three A riders. Sure enough, the 8 B's were eliminated one by one and the three A's, Joshua Ryan, Lionel Space and your humble narrator were the last three left. We basically did a three man Match Sprint, and I came up short in the final and landed third. Fun to watch I am sure, but not so fun to get smoked:)

I'd like to extend mucho thanks to Andy Stevens, who gave one of our riders a ride out there, massaged anybody who wanted one, held riders for the pursuits and basically was a great all around help. If you'd like to schedule an appointment with him, his number is 990-1459 or you can e-mail him at andy@solvomassage.com. Thanks of course, also go out to Julia Bitz and Tia Edwards. No matter how much help we have, we always seem to find more jobs for people to do. Anybody want to run the PA and announce times next time? ;)

The next track weekend is April 23 and 24. If you are definitely going, it wouldn't hurt to make a hotel reservation now. Don knows all the tricks to getting a good, cheap room in SD so email him for the best info.
March 1, 2005

The ride schedule for March is posted. I'll post the schedule for April ASAP.

The Sonoita-Patagonia TT needs to be postponed until July. The exact date will be set by the end of March and this website will have the update ASAP

Lots of competition has been happening in and around SV central. Gregg Sciabica and DR Deichman participated in the Usery Pass Races. DR did the TT and came in 1st in a time of 0:32:23. He also won the RR the next day. Gregg rode an active race in the 4s road race but wasn't able to get off the front and ended up finishing mid pack.

We had two teams in the Men's 4-5 competition at the Paradise Bakery TTT. The A team got 11th and the B team got 5th. Scott Ellis rode in the Open Men's category and finished a respectable 5th with a time of 0:45:54 in the rolling 18 mile TT.

Three riders went up for the McDowell Mountain Circuit Race. Saul Mora finished in the pack in his first crit, and Tom Davis finished just behind the fast moving 5s. Scott Ellis was in the 3s and landed a 27th.

Matt Runquist, Dermot Kealey and Zack Briefer all participated in the Valley of the Sun stage race. Dermot got 60th in the TT and managed a 12th and a 19th in the road race and crit, respectively. Combined this landed him in 34th on GC. Zack landed 5th place in each event in the Junior 10-12 Category. Matt finished 17th in the TT, 8th in the RR and 25th in the crit (winning a prime along the way) and landed 14th on GC.

ABRA has a team points competition this year and Saguaro Velo is comfortably ensconced in the middle of the pack, at 15th (of 31) with 182 points.

There was also some participation in the AZ TT #2 and Sun Devil Crit this weekend but unfortunately, results are not yet up, so you'll have to wait on those.

January 31, 2005

The February and March schedules are up on the calendar page. Let me know if you wanna lead another ride or if I got your ride wrong.

The Arizona TT #1 was this past weekend. Results aren't up yet, so these are from memory. We had eight entrants from SV. Matt Runquist did a 30:43, Scott Ellis did a 31:30, Steve Fermanich did a 32:16, Casey Bitz did a 33:06, DR did a 33:something, Tom Davis did a 35:04 and Saul and Jeff both did something around 36 (it was raining pretty hard and I never got their actual times). Anyway, great turnout and good prep the TTT in two weeks. Hopefully, it won't rain for that.

Also, the weekend before last, we had one entrant in the new Bartlett TT, Matt Runquist. I ran a 45:13, good enough for 2nd place in the 4-5s. The race was pretty well run (especially for a new race from a new club) and the course was absolutely beautiful.

The Usery Pass races are coming up this weekend. We do have a couple people going up so shoot me an email if you need a ride Matt.

The TTT teams are set. Gotta get the registration forms in, so expect a phone call from me if yr on one.

We still have some team T-shirts available. They're $8. Contact Don (325-7978) to get one.

December 6, 2004

The party was yesterday. Everybody had fun, as you can see from the photo below...
Doesn't it look like fun?

Front row (L to R)-Scott Ellis, Tom Davis, Carole Melhado, Don Melhado, Dave Deichmann, Eve Runquist, Matt Runquist, Jen Runquist.
Back row-Sven Gunn, Nate Edwards, Greg Starr, Jeff Czapla-Myers, Jason Hepler, Jay Guyot, Scott Webster, Shawna Tuttle.

This is, of course, not everybody, but it's everybody we could get together at once. The Huie family all showed up about ten minutes after the photo, and Dawn Kelly had to leave about ten minutes before, so this is just about the best we could do. I forgot to do the head and shoulders shots of everybody individually, so don't be surprised if I am lugging a camera on the rides the next couple weeks.

The ride schedule for the rest of the month is fixie rides on Saturdays and longer rides on Sundays. Shoshana Shane will be leading the Sunday rides and I or Don will be doing Saturdays. No ride on Christmas Day, but I'll be leading a ride up Mount Lemmon on New Year's Day. Hope to see you out.

Webmaster Jay and I have worked up a bunch of new pages, with info on our races, and records pages for the hill climbs and Sonoita-Patagonia's 30 mph club. The calendar is a good place to start to see the changes. Also, be sure to check out the new page footer, which includes our three newest sponsors; Solvo Massage, Todd Abelson with Charter Funding and DevaLuna Soaps. There's links to all three, so check 'em out.

December 1, 2004

Photos from El Tour are now posted in the gallery. Great job to everyone who participated.

Picnic is this Sunday. Call Matt (407-8292) for details.

Reminder: T-shirts are in. They are only 8 bucks and you can get one from Don Melhado.

Also, a bunch more pictures from SVs new and old have been published in the Gallery. Check out pictures of SVs from the 90s to today, from Tucson to Ireland to Alpe d'Huez.
